Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZMWhen you’re looking for maximum coverage around your eyes and your face, the Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM goggles has your number.  These goggles have an oversized fit and offers Oakley’s premium lens technology PRIZM to enhance the definition in the snow.

Benefits of Oversized Goggles

The main benefit of an oversized goggle is that the frame is further from your eyes which allows your eyes to focus on the environment around you verses catching the side of the goggle frame.  When you’re on skis or a snowboard and you’re cruising along at speeds of up to 60mph, the smallest mistake can have big consequences.  By removing the goggle frame from view, your eyes never have the option of getting distraction from the goggle frame.

Another benefit of an oversized frame is protection from the elements.  On cold days, you’ll do all you can to cover as much skin as possible.  With more protection around your face, you’re usually a little more comfortable in cold temperatures.  This also comes into play when you want to protect your skin from the sun’s’ rays.  You either have to apply less sunscreen to your face (small amount difference) or in the event you forget to apply sunscreen, your face gets a little more protection from the sun’s rays.

Downsides to Oversized Goggles

I found that many women don’t love the look of an oversized goggle.  Women typically have smaller faces and don’t love the bulky look of an oversized goggle.

Outside of looks, an oversized goggle can retain too much heat in the spring when temperatures are warmer.

Swapping Out Lenses on Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM Goggle

Swapping out lenses on the Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM Goggle is a breeze.  It’s one of the easiest goggle I’ve swapped out lenses out on.  There is a latch on the side of the goggles where you can unlock and lock the lens in.  It’s super simple to make to swap out your lens with this system which is a big plus in my opinion.

Oakley PRIZM Lens

The PRIZM Lens technology has been out for a couple years now with Oakley, but it’s still one of the best lens technologies for optics.  This lens does a nice job of filtering out distracting colors and allowing your eyes to focus on the colors you want to let in, a specific blue and specific orange while in the snow.  While Oakley shows a very large difference in clarity when wearing PRIZM lenses, I haven’t found that to be the case while skiing.  They are good, but they don’t pull out all the hidden bumps and ice patches in low light conditions.

To allow the goggles to adjust to different lighting conditions, the goggle comes with a total of two lenses.  One more brighter days and one for low light days.

Other Goggle Features

The Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM has a few other features worth noting.  To start, the foam between the goggle frame and your face has a total of 3 layers.  One layer is a little more firm to keep the goggle from sitting too close to your face. The next layer is a little softer and a little more breathable, allowing warm excess heat and moisture to escape without letting in the cold air.  The last layer is a soft thin layer that is comfortable on your face.

To keep the goggles on your head and helmet, there are 3 silicone strips on the inside of the goggle strap.  This is common is any new goggle today, but it’s a nice to have.

Final Thoughts

For an oversized goggle, the Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM Goggles is an excellent choice.  With a retail price point ranging between $190-$280, these goggles are one of the most expensive goggles on the market which must be taken into account when making your decision.  To learn more about the Oakley Airbrake XL PRIZM Goggle, visit Oakley.com.
