Latest in nutrition for runners, cyclist, and outdoor athletes
As most of us know by now, getting the right nutrition before, during, and after a workout or activity can really make a difference when it comes to human powered sports such as running, cycling, climbing, hiking, kayaking, skiing, and more. It used to be that words such as protein were commonly associated with gym rats, but it turns out that these people might have been on to something. Not to say that you need to go out and buy out your local GNC, but incorporating a little protein is worth looking into.
I’ve had the chance to test out a few nutritional products lately that target the endurance community including Clif Builder Bars and some new products from ProBar. All the products I tried out had a good flavor balance, meaning they didn’t taste overwhelmingly chalky or too sweet given they are trying to pack a bunch of nutrients into a small package.
Pro Bar introduces 2 brand spaken new products for 2013
It was about 4 years ago when I was first introduced to Pro Bar. As I am often shown new products everyday, I thought to myself, great another bar… As it turns out, I asked for a number of samples so I could try them out in various activities to see whether they’d make a performance difference in my activities. While I was a bit skeptical to begin with, I was super impressed with the taste, flavor, consistency how well they made me feel during and after my activities. The name of the bar is the Pro Bar Meal, and it can truly be considered a meal. These bars pack a punch when it comes to the amount of nutrients and calories. The Pro Bar Meal Bar comes in 12 different flavors these days and they are all incredibly tasty. These bars are great for long days of hiking, skiing, climbing, mountain biking, etc.
With ProBar’s growing popularity among endurance athletes, they decided it was time to come out with what they call Probar Bolt, which are energy chews that offer a bolt of energy, pretty clever, eh? All jokes aside, the Pro Bar Bolts are great for when you want to reload on lost nutrients during a race or workout and you need the energy fast. These chews are packed with electrolytes, B vitamins, antioxidants, and complex carbs Best of all, their organic for all you health nuts out there. Flavors include orange, berry blast, raspberry, and strawberry. My favorite flavor is orange, but I tend to gravitate towards citrus flavored energy chews and gels.
Another product that’s new from Probar this year is the Probar Core Bar. Now that’s a mouthful, literally! The Core bar is a protein packed bar that has a really good texture consistency as it doesn’t taste chalky and pasty, but it incorporates different protein rich ingredients to keep it from tasting like you’re eating a bag of cement. The Probar Core Bar has 20 grams of protein with 290 calories in one 2.48 oz. bar. These are great for when you want to make sure your muscles are getting enough protein on extended runs, rides, hikes, etc. Flavors include browny crisp, cookie dough, peanut butter, and my favorite, mint chocolate.
