Vasque Lost 40 Winter Boot Review
Having cold and wet feet means having to call it quits. When you put on the Vasque Lost 40 Winter Boots, you’ll have all the winter weather protection you will need to keep on trekking. This Dual zone lace-up boot features a thick felted wool, removable liner, a Vibram Overland outsole that will keep you steady and a waterproof, rough-out leather outer boot, ready to repel water, snow, and ice.
Upper of the Lost 40
The outer boot of the Vasque Lost 40 is made up of a 2mm waterproof rough-out leather and a breathable, abrasion resistant softshell textile for a flexible, yet durable upper. Built inside of the outer boot is a waterproof membrane that keeps moisture out and helps to retain heat within the boot. There are generous finger loops on the outer and inner boots to help allow for easy entry.
Getting the boots on for the first time was a very tight fit for both the women’s and men’s boots, even after freeing the laces. Thank goodness for the finger loops. Once on, the fit on the Men’s felt perfect. While, the fit for the Women’s remained snug. Taking the boots off is an adventure in itself, these boots will not fall into the category of “easy on and off boots”, to quick run the garbage can out to the end of the road. Over time and use, the boots do get a little easier to get on and off as the felt liner somewhat conforms to the foot and the material gives slightly, but these are by no means a slip on boot.
The dual zone lacing system allows for independent adjustment over the instep and in the shaft of the boot. A lace garage keeps the lace ends tucked away for a snag free fit. The dual lace system is for tension of application, but it mostly works to hold the boot to the end of the leg as opposed to clinching around the foot. This allows for unrestricted blood flow and some space for the insulation to work, but it does give you the ability to give it a quick pull and cinch the boot a bit more snug.
We have used these boots down to temperatures approaching -10°F and there was never a time that our feet were cold. While moving or standing still our feet were always happy. Making them ideal for all types of winter activities, such as sledding, hiking, snow shoveling and even ice fishing.
The inner boot liner is made from a 7 mm thick felted wool, which gives the ultimate protection and warmth in the deep cold of winter as well as excellent temperature regulation in a wide range of winter conditions.
The only moisture that ever made it inside of the boots was from perspiration. And even at that, it was little to none, as the felt liners do their job amazingly well at keeping the boots warm and dry. Thanks to the finger loop on the felt liners, they are easily removable for drying, should the need arise. They are however not so easy to insert back into the boot.
Sole of the Lost 40
The Vasque Lost 40 is equipped with the Vibram Overland outsole that has IceTrek molded into the rubber compound, which remains flexible and grippy even in extremely cold temperatures. An internal EVA midsole is combined with aerospace grade Aerogel foam insulation in the boot that gives it an excellent resistance to conductive heat loss from the ground.
Vasque has developed a great traction system into these boots. On anything short of glare ice, we were able to move confidently. Smooth ice was of course another issue and I’d recommend wearing micro spikes should that be anticipated in your outting. Stability provided by the solid base passed on well into the flexible calf area and our ankles were never stressed when walking around or even trekking through the woods on long winter hikes.
