Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip
It’s a powder day. The snow sprays up on you with each turn. Exhilaration fills your body and you’re working up a sweat as you reach the bottom. And now for the long cold and windy lift ride back up the slopes. For situations like this, you need a base layer that will keep up with you and keep you warm and dry. Helly Hansen’s Warm Freeze 1/2 Zip was designed to do just that. I tested this base layer out on a cold powder day skiing and some chilly fall hikes and it lived up to its design.
First Impressions of the Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip
All of my base layers are solid colors, more or less underwear. So it was nice to see the feminine floral pattern of the Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip. The base layer I tested was the white symbios print, but it also comes in seven other unique patterns and colors.
The fabric of the Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip felt soft and thick. The HHⓇWarm base layer technology is made of two layers. The next to skin under layer is made of Helly Hansen’s LifaⓇ fiber technology which is a soft mesh-like fabric that wicks moisture away from your skin. The outside layer is made of premium merino wool to provide a warm layer of insulation that can also manage moisture.
The fit of the Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip was snug yet comfortable as a base layer should fit. I typically wear size small in most women’s shirts, but the medium fit perfectly. You may want to order a size up. I often have trouble finding base layers that are long enough in the sleeves to stay put on my wrists, but the sleeve length was perfect. Also, the cuffs of the sleeves are made of a stretchy fabric that fit snugly against my wrists. This kept the sleeves in place and blocked out the cold. The body of the shirt also gave plenty of length to wear over tights when hiking or tuck into my ski pants without riding up.
Wearing the Women’s Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip
Fall lasted a long time in the Colorado mountains, which allowed for lots of cool morning hikes. The Women’s Helly Hansen Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip was the perfect single layer to wear. It was surprisingly warm all on its own and on especially cold mornings paired perfectly with a vest. Once I reached a sweat on the uphill climb, the fabric dried quickly so I never got cold even when reaching the summit.
Once the winter switch turned on, snow and cold dominated our Colorado weather. The Women’s Helly Hansen Warm Freeze 1/2 Zip has continued to be my go to technical base layer in cold weather. It kept me warm and dry under a fleece layer hiking in the snow.
When paired with a down ski jacket, I was able to stay warm and dry on the first big powder day of the season. Working up a sweat on the downhill, the Women’s Helly Hansen Helly Hansen HHⓇWarm Freeze 1/2 Zip wicked the moisture from my skin so I was able to stay warm on the lift rides between powder laps. Also, after taking a spill hitting a buried tree stump, the snug fitting cuffs prevented snow from getting up my sleeves.
