Looks good, feels good, lives up to its billing as lightweight, and can take a beating from the elements. Those are my initial take-a-ways on the Eddie Bauer Momentum Jacket from the first handful of uses in the crazy fluctuating Spring-like conditions we’ve experienced these past few months.

The Eddie Bauer Momentum Lightweight Jacket

Let’s Go Play in the Snow, Rain, and Wind.

I received this Eddie Bauer Momentum jacket at the perfect time. The beautiful state of Colorado is blessed with 300+ days of sunshine, but for once we are experiencing what I would call real genuine Spring-like conditions. The three day forecast called for rain, sleet, snow, and not a single glimpse of that precious sun. Very unique, but I took the opportunity to go running all three days anyways.

Held up well during a driving rain.

I had read up on the jacket and knew it would be lightweight. It is truly very thin and almost feather-like. At first, I was a little skeptical, but I stayed dry for my 5 mile run. The temps were hovering around 32 degrees, so I had some layers on underneath.  I did create a bit of a sweat pocket without much airflow. Hence, it lacked the ability to dump some of that perspiration. Not really an issue, but worth mentioning if you intend to use this for a longer time period with more vigorous exercise. For a walk, casual hike, bike commuting, or daily wear, this Eddie Bauer Momentum is certainly up for the task.

A true test in wet snow and sleet with a sideways wind.

I like to hit the mountain trails, and conditions can change on a dime. I think this will be a pretty good companion this summer. I wholeheartedly intend to use this Eddie Bauer Momentum jacket for mountain hikes/runs and ‘peak bagging’ Thirteen and Fourteen Thousand foot mountain tops. A little rain, snow, or the very likely high altitude winds is something the Momentum can surely handle.

Technical Benefits and Features

The Eddie Bauer Momentum is constructed with STORMREPEL DWR (Durable Water-Repellent) Finish. It allows the jacket to shed moisture, so it doesn’t soak into the fabric. Without the benefit of me having years of use or even a full season on this particular jacket, they do claim that this high level of water-repellency will be maintained even with extensive use. The jury is out on that, but I’ll report back if this is not the case.

I’d have to say this Momentum lacks a lot of fancy features, but that is the beauty of it. It does however, have nice big pockets with zippers, and the hood with draw string is super handy to stop any draft issues. That’s it. Not a lot of fancy additions to bulk it up or add more weight. It is what it is, a simple super light water-repellent jacket for the occasional rain shower one might encounter while out playing in nature.

The sleeves have a good tight elastic closure preventing the wind from sneaking in.

I do wish they had used a slightly heavier thread at a few critical points, and that’s my one issue. You can certainly put this in the ‘user error’ column, as I hastily attempted to put on my jacket while wearing a thicker fleece sweatshirt. My arm got caught, and the armpit stitching came loose just slightly. Nothing a few minutes with a needle and thread won’t be able to fix. In addition, I’ll need to be more careful by not stuffing bulkier clothing through.

Final Take on the Eddie Bauer Momentum

Overall, this is certainly a good addition for any time the forecast calls for showers or wind. Lightweight is a little bit of a Pro and a Con for me on this jacket. You are buying this for its lightweight, so that is to be expected. It has certainly stood up to some more extreme conditions which makes it a very good value. Large pockets are a big plus. And if conditions improve, the Eddie Bauer Momentum stuffs away so small that bringing it along for most hikes, bikes, runs, walks is a no-brainer.

A nice tight little bundle which makes this a no brainer to bring on any excursion.
